No queda otra…

The charming bees of Piotr Socha

5 diciembre, 2016 Por pilukao Deja un comentario

A perfect combination of funny pictures and simple educational texts. And the undisputed protagonists, our beloved bees.

We can not think of a better way to aproach the bee-universe and  reach all audiences. The Polish Piotr Socha is to blame.

Piotr Socha, author of the book Bees
Piotr Socha, author of the book Bees

Illustrator Piotr Socha became interested in bees by family history: his father is an amateur beekeeper.

But this point of departure is not enough for a subject to take you to the point of dedicating one of your works completely. Something must «sting» inside.

The-book-of-bees. Piotr Socha

Interview with Piotr Socha

–What was the determining factor to approach this project? It was perhaps a project long desired?

At first, we ( me and Wydawnictwo Dwie Siostry – publisher of «Bees») wanted to publish any illustrated book for children. But we didn’t know what it would be about. We had no subject of such a book.

I sent them one illustration which looked like taken from old botanic atlas.

It presented invented, funny insects (see attached)

When I told them that my father is a bee keeper and they answered me: -«then make a book about bees».

So it wasn’t my idea but I found it very interesting at once. My imagination started to work very fast from this moment. I thought that it’s a good ocasion to dedicate the book to my parents who have had an apiary for 40 years. I worked with them several times. I was affraid of bees but this world seemed to me very mysterious and fascinating. First I started to read a lot about bees life and about people and the bees in the history of mankind.

I found many fascinating information, even much more than were published in a book.

–How long it takes to do an illustration?

That depends. One of them are more laborius, others I made faster. First I make a pencil sketch on a paper. When I’m satisfied with it, I scan it to the computer and colour it. It takes few days to finish such illustration like those from “Bees”. This illustrations are more laborious than other because they have many details.

For example when you have to draw different flowers pollinated by the bees.

It’s a lot of work when you have to prepare more than 30 such illustrations to the book. I worked like a bee.

–Do you like honey? Which is your favorite honey?

Yes, I like honey very much. I know only few kind of honey: linden, acacia, buckweat, mixed flower, honeydew.

Of course I would like to taste many other, for example: onion, manuka, mint,  eucalyptus, orange, etc..

My favourite is buckweat honey because of its recognizable, strong taste.

–What have you discovered about bees they you didn´t know before making this book and that has surprised you?

There is so many informations I didn’t know after preparing the book. Its difficult to choose only few.

Thirst of all I realized that bees are so important to the people for thousand of years all over the world: in Europe, Asia, Africa and other continents.

In ancient Egypt they told pharaon “prince of the bees”.  But main think is that pollination is more important then a honey.

I wasn’t aware of it earlier that they “produce” our food, 70% of most important vegetables and fruits are pollinate by bees.

Their work is worth many billions of euros every year and bees work for free!

Moreover I wasn’t aware that one bees family have fly even about 150 000 kilometers to gather nectar for 1kg of linden honey.

All of the people have to be aware of it. We have to protect them, because they work for us. Wergilius, ancient Roman poet, wrote in his poem “Georgiki” that bees are powerful and strong like Cyklops – mithological giants and he was absolutely right.

Bees and dinos from Piotr Socha
Bees and dinos from Piotr Socha

–Have you thought someday becoming amateur beekeeper like your father?

I’m very proud of my father and the fact that he was a bee keeper.

A year and a half ago, he lost his bees, they left almost all of his hives. My father didn’t know why it happened. Bees left the hives full of food. He was very sad. I told him, that bees left his apiary because they start to work for me.

I was thinking about my book which turned out to be very popular in Poland and was published in: Spain, German, Italy, France, Great Britain, Finland, Netherlands and soon will be available in USA, Russia, China, South Korea and in some other countries too next year.

I think I would never could be as good a bee -keeper as my father was, but «never say never». Maybe one day…? Now I’m concentrating on drawing but I’m really satisfied that I made this book. It’s the best of my works so far.

Where to buy The Book of Bees

It does not matter if you are a child, young or younger, if you are an amateur beekeeper or just passing by, if you read a lot of books or you read nothing.

«Bees» will surprise you. Enjoy it.

Buy the book in your favorite bookstore, or through an online store, the thing is to have close to the Bees of Piotr Socha.Libro Abejas de Piotr Socha (Spain) and The Book of Bees. Piotr Socha for UK.

Airport´s honey

9 marzo, 2015 Por Alberto Deja un comentario

First we discover  concrete or béton honey  and now  airport honey. We review the reasons from different airports in the world to include hives in «its workforce».

Terminal 1. Abu Dhabi airport. Urban beekeeping: airport´s honey
Terminal 1. Abu Dhabi airport. Hexagonal architecture. Urban beekeeping: airport´s honey

What  the responsibles in Munich airport (Germany) wanted to know is the influence of its activity on the quality of the food produced in airport´s environment, one of the main  issues discussed among the population of that area.

Will the compounds expelled by combustion in aircraft engines form part of the composition of vegetables or honey produced in the airport zone?

They chose the honey, bee wax and pollen produced by bees in the airport grounds to analyze and check whether they contained substances harmful to our body, as  result of the activity at the air base.

From 2008 local bee products were monitoresd by scanning for harmful substances, making parallel tests with honeys from other parts of the region without any influence of the planes activity.

In the spring and summer each bee will visit over 1,000 flowers a day, suckling nectar or  collecting pollen.

Cleaning or dirt from the hive environment around 2-3 kilometers, should be reflected in honey, pollen or wax.

Samples of these 3 products of the hive, were sent to  laboratory  for analysis to find residues of contaminants such as heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons emitted by aircraft fuels.

The positive results have been published for the information of the population concerned. Only one sample of pollen, honey and wax presented small deviations from other honeys in concentration of heavy metals, but even these samples are within the permissible values.

Stuttgart Airport. It is one of the eight German airports that analyze hive products  near the airport to find waste air activity. It is the public Beekeeping Institute of the University of Hohemheim the one responsible for certifying that the local honey airport can be safely eaten. 2 apiaries, one on the west side of the track and another in the east with 11 hives that in 2012 produced 280 jars of honey.

The other German airports with presence of hives and analysis of their products are Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Dresden, Hannover, Leipzig-Halle and Nuremberg. Malmor airport in Sweden has a similar project.

Beehives in the Frankfurt airport

The vastness of airport security areas, with many urban acres with diverse flora without pesticide treatments, are an attraction for beekeepers and those responsible for airports that want to enhance the green image of this  facility.

It´s at the Chicago airport (USA),  where a non-governmental organization called Sweet beginnings, seeking for job opportunities for men and women who have recently left prison, have place 75 hives, the highest known concentration of beehives in an airport.

Airport Montreal (Canada) and Copenhagen (Denmark) work with the same vision, installing hives in their green areas in collaboration with local beekeepers.

Good initiatives that serve to control and watch the influence of human activity with the help of bees.

Bees behind bars

TV news informing about prisoners graduating as beekepers
TV news informing about prisoners graduating as beekepers

We knew the existence of programs of therapy and animal-assisted education in prisons of Spain and the United States, countries where governements have worked for years in rehabilitation programs to integrate prison population in sociaty, teaching inmates to train service dogs, a way to facilitate people their social integration. Using dogs as therapy for problems of other inmates is also known.

The way to work consists of  building teams, whose members will be 1 to 2 dogs (usually the labrador kind), a group of inmates (on psychosocial assessment and each with their individual work plan) and an intervention team, formed by an officer, a psychologist, an educator and responsible in prison for that  area. The welfare of animals within the prison is also taken into account. After basic training in animal management, internal will be responsible for their care, which includes feeding, hygiene and make the dog walks, all within correctional facilities. Regularly the results of this program are evaluated.

Working with animals stimulates the emotional development of people, improves self-esteem and confidence, sense of responsibility and competence and reduces domestic violence. Proven the effectiveness of these therapies with animals for cases of self-esteem, self-concept, communication and values development.

The positive thing about animals is that there´s no judge or recall of past events which led to the arrival of the inmates at the prison. Therefore, animals adapt to working with women prisoners, inmates in isolation, inmates in the last period of sentencing, youth, disabled inmates and inmates with mental illness.

It seems more difficult to replace dogs by bees in the reintegration of people, but there are very interesting experiences. The state of Florida (USA) is one of the pioneers, setting up the first academy of beekeeping in prison in 2011. During 6 weeks, 19 inmates received a crash course in beekeeping by industry professionals. At the end of this period they were examined, with very good results. The possibility of working as beekeepers were opened for them, since the bigger Florida beekeeper with 15,000 hives offered them a job.

More cases with bees. County Correctional Complex in Del Vall Travis, Texas (USA). 2014, supported by the Association of protection of the bee, several inmates, after a course of 120 hours,  were certified in order to work as beekeepers.

Inmates trained to be beekeepers. Bees behind bars
Inmates trained to be beekeepers. Bees behind bars

Stafford Creek Correctional Center in Aberdeen, Washington (USA). Year 2009. 4 hives were placed inside the prison, 3 of them in the garden center, and another that served as observation hive, inside a greenhouse. An entomologist or insect expert met weekly for two months with 10 prisoners, and after each class they  checked together the hives. Inmates emphasized the social interdependence of the hive, one more example to combat isolation in jail or in society and offered to cooperate in the investigation of depopulation of hives

And we could not finish this article without an example  where prisoners extracted and packed their own honey. Maryland Correctional Center (USA), where a 32 years  intern worked as a beekeeper, along with two prison civil servants, began to pack the extracted  honey. Honey will Catada by tasted by center staff and if the thing goes well, next years will be donated to food banks.

Surely there will be more cases worldwide. What haunts us through your head is whether honey in prison have some peculiarity that becomes special. Time to time to know.

Ben and Holly visit the bees

25 febrero, 2015 Por Alberto Deja un comentario

Yes, his kingdom is small, because Ben is an elf and Holly is a fairy and are also tiny. But it is a kingdom rich in adventures and with fun characters living in.

«Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom»  is a series of british animation aimed at children, created by Mark Baker and Neville Astley in 2009 and produced by Astley Baker Davies, the promoters of the world famous » Peppa Pig «.

In this small kingdom Ben is one of the great tree elves and Holly is the princess and apprentice magician, although not always spells out fine.

This series really likes to the little in house, possibly for its striking color and because the stories are simple, fun and easy to understand for children. As my niece five years old says: «I like it because you can find out whether or no elves exist and there are also humans».

Ben and Holly are friends and share adventures in the series. And one of those fun experiences led them to visit a hive.

In this episode, during a picnic, we discovered that Holly’s father, King Thistle, who is very fond of honey sandwiches, but yet hates bees. Says without hesitation that bees do nothing good and that honey bees are not the one to fill honey in the jar.

All are very surprised of the ignorance of the king and asked if he did not learn in school what the bees are engaged. And he confirms that he went to a school where kings were taught mainly to greet people by hand.
Mr. Elf explains to everyone how bees collect nectar and Holly tells excited:  I would love to see a beehive !. The king took the opportunity to ask Mr. Elf to get him a jar of honey.
The hive which visit Ben and Holly has a door, but surprisingly bees access to the interior through a hole in the top ( Will not  the rain flood the hive t?). Easily recognize the queen bee because it is huge and takes a beautiful crown on her royal head.

The beekeeper elf asks Nana to do a magic spell to  sleep the bees, so you can easily go to get some honey. But Nana did it wrong and let the elf slept like a log.
Once solved the misunderstanding, the beekeeper elf, disguised as a bee,  in order to go unnoticed and to fill the jar of honey for the king. A helicopter elves introduces the elf thorough the top hole, holding it by a cable. It looks like a scene from «Mission Impossible», but in cartoons.

While the elf is filling the jar with honey, bees wake up and cornered the beekeeper elf, which is speeding away. But the bees confused the elf with their  queen and a swarm persistently pursues him through the sky.

Then  he decides to take refuge in the castle, but bees  are swarming around. Finally, the beekeeper elf do not find another solution that  to throw the costume to the hive to confuse bees and being able to escape.

Swarm get their honey. Ben and Holly

A very visual and easy message for kids. We tell our beekeepers to disguise as a bee and  try to taste honey. Maybe they will get unnoticed by bees and can spare  a few bee stings …
