Bumblebees and sugar packets

Bear and bumblebees in sugar packets
Bear and bumblebees in sugar packets

We wanted to loop the loop, and look for any trace of apiculture (bee, beehives or honey) on the envelopes in which sugar is supplied together with coffee, tea or infusion. We realize that this is quite difficult as promoting honey in a packet of sugar would have much merit.

But our efforts have been rewarded, and we´ve met a collector of sugar packets, and thanks to his kindness and his superb collection he has discovered us some examples of the presence of bumblebees in sugar packets.

We take this opportunity to ask Enrique J. Garcia Valls for his hobby:

– Any special name for this hobby?

Glucosbalaitonfilia, is the art of collecting sugar packets. It is an invented word that has no accepted as such but many collectors taken for valid.

Do you know any famous or historical figure who collected sugar packets?

No, I do not know any character who will collect them, simply because it is a type of very recent collecting.

– When was the beginning of  packaging  the sugar in small envelopes?

In Spain, in the late 60s, early 70s, although this could change  in some countries, where was initiated earlier or  later.

– What is the purpose of including images on the surface of the envelope?

The exact purpose I do not know but may initially be more due to advertising purposes. Currently including images or phrases on the envelopes do more for self-publicity and less for  culture. There are some packaging  such as the brand Cafe Camel which includes culture as an axiom of their brand, which should be copied by all others.

– How many fans may be in the world for this type of collecting?

In Spain there are many collectors, the number may exceed 300 collectors, and if we’re thinking of  France, Italy, … there are many more.

Attached  some webs in different countries:

Spain: http://www.azucarpicasso.com/

– What examples of sugar sachets are most valued?

The envelopes of old series and old envelopes in general. The envelopes have a different value for each type of collector.

– What do you do when you come together in a specific conference on your topic?

Switch between us.

– Are there other collections like those of sugar packets?

Sweeteners collectors, napkins collectors

In the collection of Enrique, one  series of sugar packets from US, issued in the 70s, which shows bumblebees together with rabbits and bears.

Bees and luck. Another way of collecting bees

17 enero, 2015 Por Alberto Deja un comentario

The life of collectors has evolved considerably in recent years. There are lots of web pages dedicated to the buying and selling of collectibles and not just in your inner circle, it is now possible with the whole world. So preparing this article on collecting with bees, we have found very easy to find a good amount of bees, bumble bees and hives related to chance, fortune and wealth.

  • National Lottery Spain. It was created by the governants of 1811, as one more way to raise money. With the inclusion of images, in addition to more attractive lottery tickets, they could  enlighten the population or draw attention to any celebration or event. Series dedicated to the discovery of America, pre-Columbian art, great inventions of history, or series of Iberian flora and fauna.

Beekeeping lottery ticket. Year 1978, within the series dedicated to natural resources. A bee, a flower and a beehive.

Lottery ticket dedicated to the canarian black bee.Included in fauna series. It is emphasized that this bee has been adapted for thousands of years to the flora of the Canary Islands ago, with very productive results and gentle behaviour. On the island of La Palma retains its higher degree of purity. It is speculated that the arrival of this bee 200,000 years ago in a trunk coming from  the African continent. Today Canary Islands struggle to preserve its purity, after many years of living with the foreign bee.

Its validity as fundraising and easy method of getting money, were called into question by the followers of certain religions. Today, most of the states run its own lottery.

Scratch cards. Designed from 2005 to 2009. honey spoons, hives and combs or honey jars to achieve good prizes. Again we played with similar pronunciation in English between the verb be and the Eenglish word for bee.

Postal stamps from the Guineas: learning from bees and geography

23 diciembre, 2014 Por Alberto Deja un comentario

We could have titled this article » Place on the world map all nations called Guinea » or » why  there are so many countries with a similar name and their beekeeping » . We found 4 countries that include the word Guinea in their description, and it is now necessary to incorporate some last name not to be confused .

– Papua New Guinea or PNG . It is the eastern half of a large island at the north of Australia . The word Guinea is due to the similarity found by a Spanish navigator to the inhabitants of the island with those in the african gulf of Guinea. Wild colonies of Apis cerana arrived to the island. They are not the only bees, we read that honey bees , Apis mellifera, were introduced to the island in the 40s of XX century. Neighboring countries such as New Zealand and Australia have supported the development of the island beekeeping through training programs or beekeeping equipment supply , and the last push was given by the local government with finantial measures. 5000 hives and 100 tons of annual honey production are the figures in Papua New Guinea. Due to its recent founding as a nation in 1975 , there´s a lack of  issue stamps dedicated to bees .

– Republic of Guinea , Guinea Conakry or Old French Guinea. West African country with a high percentage of Muslim population. Honey is incorporated in the preparation of meals and drinks during the month of Ramadan , as well as in traditions associated with weddings. Training programs for local beekeepers have increased the yield per hive.

Several stamps dedicated to the species Apis mellifera , its subspecies Apis mellifera scutellata and Apis mellifera capensis , who live in the area and moths Fabriciana Niobe and Acherontia atropos. Bees also shares stamps with butterfly Polyommatus icarus and with plant and flower Polystachya pubescens.

In these stamps issues, also a tribute from the Republic of Guinea to the relationship orchids-bees. Acampe pachyglossa is a native orchid Africa , emitting a sweet fragrance during the day, The other stamp is dedicated to African ansellia , another orchid that can be found in this country and is pollinated by african bee . As if that were not enough , several stamps dedicated to the bees in the world, probably issued for insect-collectors.

– Republic of Guinea Bissau , a former Portuguese colony in Africa , with a population of 1.6 million. The Fula and Mandingo ethnic groups have been known as » hunter bees » for generations, passing down beekeping knownledge from father to son. Traditional hives, made of wicker and hanged in the trees,  were destroyed each year to collect honey and wax. Lack of access in many rural areas to water and electricity has not favored the correct operation of extracting honey. Promoting the use of Kenyan hive,  creating small bee businesses, training in beekeeping management and improving food hygiene of local beekeepers are expected to boost this activity.

Despite gaining independence in 1974 , in what concerns the issue of bee stamps, we can say that has not been idle. In some stamps the shows us Apis mellifera and their hexagonal cells ,  not forgetting  pests that threaten bees, like the beetle Aethina tumida, offering  a description of this beetle and comparing its size with bee. One good example of beekeeping training through postage.

More training in the following issues: a beekeeper gathering honey , an example of worker bees , queen and drone, a beehive in a tree trunk. To complete this, stamps of other bees and bumblebees.

One of pollinators, a representation of a swarm on a branch on a tree and different images of beei n  flowers complete this abundant representation.

– Equatorial Guinea . Former spanish colony. We have not found information on beekeeping in this country, and only a humble stamp dedicated to «unknown» bumblebee. We will continue working to complete the information in this country.

Postal stamps: bees and bumble bees in Canada and USA

10 noviembre, 2014 Por Alberto Deja un comentario

Canada. More than 250 years has been running the mail in this country that did not start with these so elegant stamps on paper, but with post horses which were delivering news from the colony of Canada to Britain.

We have concentrated  to collect in this post those stamps related to bees and bumblebees.

Our first selection is a postcard series that includes a Canadian bear, the famous «honey-addited» Winnie the Pooh, acquired by a British military in Canada when he was just a young bear, and donated by him to the London Zoo. There the bear was  frequently visited by the author’s son (Alan A.Milne), hence the idea and character. The bear was named Winnie, due to the Canadian state of origin, Winnipeg.

The Canadian postal service has not been forgotten to the bumblebees. In this case a Bombus polaris, also known as Arctic Bumblebee, which inhabits a few geographic areas somewhat peculiar as Canada, Alaska and the Arctic islands, North of Scandinavia and Russia, so no wonder all the hair that covers its body. Its great ecological value si tha pollinates the flora of the Arctic, and in any of its flowers exclusively. Another features are its little aggressiveness and the mechanism used to resist the low temperatures, consistent in moving its body muscles related to the flight to produce heat. Issue of this stamp of Bumblebee belongs to the the year 2007, within a collection dedicated to the beneficial insects.

Beekeeping in Canada. In a country as large and extensive, most of the honey produced comes from prairie areas. Honey production and pollination services are its most important activities. The annual harvest is estimated in 60 kilograms of honey per hive. There are major problems of winter mortality. The trend is the increase in hives and the decrease in the number of beekeepers. We want to emphasize the importance of other bees as the blue Orchid bee or another one named cutting-leaves of alfalfa bee in pollination services.

United States of America. None other than Benjamin Franklin was named in 1775 chief  of the postal service. Since then, they have had time to delight us with different postal stamps of bees, pollinators and even one dedicated to the hair- style calle beehive. We really miss any issue  of the pollination work of these insects.

Postal stamp devoted to honey bee in 1988. We believe that they could be much more, since in this country many states of the union like the honeybee as their favorite bug, as happens in  Arkansas and North Carolina since 1973.Three other states did in 1975, Georgia, Maine and Nebraska. And other states have continued the tradition.

Postal stamp tribute to the beehive hair-style. In the 50s and 60s of the 20th century an american stylist introduced this new concept.

Postal stamp tribute to pollinators (2007).Two bumblebees known as Morrison (Bombus morrisoni). The bees are not the only pollinators, other insects like wasps, flies, butterflies, moths and beetles are good pollinators. Hummingbirds and some bats surprised us with its pollinating function.

Beekeeping in the United States of North America. Just as in Canada, pollination services play an important role, with the transhumance of hives as a factor to highlight.
